The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) has launched in 1999, together with Eurostat, the European Union's Statistical Office, the European Statistical Laboratory (ESL). The objective of the ESL is to increase the efficiency and cohesion of the European statistical system. EUROSTAT and the JRC are partners in the European Statistical Laboratory (ESL). The objective of ESL is to increase the efficiency and cohesion of the European statistical system.

EUROSTAT in collaboration with national statistical institutes (NSIs), collects, consolidates and harmonises statistics that are relevant to all EU policies.

In this context, JRC contributes to the creation of a European Research Area in official statistics, by animating thematic networks that ensure better and timely Knowledge of the methodological and technological developments, in partnership with the academia and the statistical institutes of the member states.

Themes of interest are time series analysis, metadata, data editing, confidentiality, data capture, electronic data interchange, and others, that are focused in a series of international seminars on ‘Echange of Technology and Know-how’ (ETK), jointly organised by Eurostat and the JRC.

Beside Eurostat and the JRC, also the Information Society Directorate (DG INFSO) contributes to this activity, by financing via the 5th Framework Programme an accompanying measure (AMRADS) in this domain.
