Beyond GDP: Measuring the Progress of Societies

Twelve years after the 1995 Taking Nature into Account conference, going Beyond GDP was the declared intention of a conference organised on 19 & 20 November 2007 in Brussels by the European Commission, European Parliament, Club of Rome, OECD and WWF. You may consult the official programme here.

This site is intended to provide critical info on "Green GDP", i.e. on attempts to deduct environmental damages from GDP, and ideas how to overcome such difficulties. It reflects strictly personal reflections of its authors, and any views expressed here should not be confounded with official views of the European Commission.

Furthermore, we will show approaches that address more effectively the complexity of decision-making in the 21st century: Click here to read Well Being Stories (by Andrea Saltelli, Jochen Jesinghaus and Giuseppe Munda, all JRC; also as pdf).

One approach developed at JRC in cooperation with the Canadian IISD is the Dashboard of Sustainability, a popular tool for displaying complex indicator sets. Inter alia, the SD indicators of the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and the Millennium Development Goals indicators have been translated into the highly communicative dashboard format.
