CGSDI Dashboard: Contents |
A CGSDI & Footprint
One of the best-known environmental indices is the Ecological Footprint developed by Mathis Wackernagel at Redefining Progress
B Trade & Environment
A selection of 24 trade-relevant indicators, weighted idiosyncratically by Jochen Jesinghaus - it certainly would be more helpful to start a democratic process for the definition of issues and priorities in this still hardly defined policy field.
C Belgium, USA, Italy: environmental performance
A comparison of the environmental performance of three OECD countries. In this figure, valuation is "absolute", i.e. regardless of income - naturally, "Env" is dark red for the U.S. The next figure will show the comparison relative to income.
D Relative environmental performance
The same comparison, however valued by income per capita, i.e. the colour code refers to the expected performance for a given income class. The "relative valuation" feature of the Dashboard allows a more differentiated picture of policy performance.
E OECD & subsoil assets
Norway, Australia and Canada have considerable subsoil resources, but they are not comparable to those of Saudi Arabia. This indicator has been slightly "smoothed" to take account of the outlier Saudi Arabia.
F Policy Performance Index: the Global Picture
Switzerland on top, Democratic Republic of Congo at the bottom - even if that may correspond to our intuitive impressions, the index composition itself is open for debate. Please send a mail to Jochen, or visit the web site of JRC...
G Dashboard map Europe
With the new maps function of the Dashboard, indicator values can be displayed by continent. You can even select a region and zoom in to show more detail, e.g. during a presentation (did you know that the PageDown button selects the next favourite?)
H Governance & Risk: Asia
An attempt to cluster some indicators related to the risk of hate, instability, violence and terrorism; the colour codes correspond at least vaguely to our expectations. Data coverage for Afghanistan is not sufficient to produce a "Social Index".
I Governance & Risk: Africa
Same as before, but for the African continent. White spots are not included in the database.
J Factor 10 & Material Throughput
The closest match to the Factor 10 & MIPS concepts. Congratulations to Friedrich Schmidt-Bleek, who was awarded the Takeda prize together with Ernst von Weizsäcker!
K Eco-Efficiency and de-coupling
The CGSDI environment index plotted vs. per capita income - a first rudimentary attempt to operationalize "eco-efficiency", defined as "economic value added per unit of environmental pressure". There are huge differences between OECD states. Norway and Sweden are "top", Greece, Belgium and Turkey combine low income with poor environmental performance.
